Clearlight red light therapy inside the Sanctuary 3 infrared sauna

This randomized controlled trial explored how LED light therapy may support sensitive skin, a condition often associated with heightened reactivity, redness, discomfort, and impaired skin barrier function.

Thirty participants with sensitive skin were divided into three groups: a control group using an emollient, a group receiving 590 nm yellow LED light therapy, and a group receiving a combination of 590 nm yellow and 630 nm red light therapy. Treatments were performed three times per week, with participants evaluated over an eight-week period.

Researchers found that both LED therapy groups experienced significant improvements in sensitive-skin symptom scores compared with the control group. The 590 nm yellow light group also demonstrated improvements in several objective skin measurements, including redness, transepidermal water loss, pigmentation measurements, and skin sensitivity. The combined 590/630 nm treatment also significantly improved sensitivity during testing. No adverse events were reported during the study.

These findings suggest that LED photobiomodulation may offer a gentle, non-invasive approach to supporting sensitive skin and healthy skin barrier function. The researchers noted particularly promising results with 590 nm yellow light, while combined red and yellow wavelengths may provide complementary benefits.

In other words, targeted LED light therapy may help calm visible and sensory signs of sensitive skin while supporting the skin’s natural barrier — though larger and longer-term studies would help further establish these benefits.
