A study conducted by researchers from Kagoshima University Faculty of Medicine in Japan explored the benefits of infrared sauna therapy for patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Chronic fatigue syndrome is a debilitating illness characterized by persistent fatigue, sleep disturbances, memory problems, and physical pain, with no truly effective conventional treatments. Many patients turn to alternative therapies like infrared sauna treatments to manage their symptoms. In this study, ten patients with CFS were treated using a specific infrared sauna protocol, which involved 15 minutes of sauna exposure at 60°C followed by 30 minutes of rest under blankets. The results showed significant reductions in perceived fatigue, as well as improvements in mood, anxiety, and depression levels. The patients also reported improvements in their ability to resume normal social and work activities.

Infrared sauna therapy works by gently warming the body and promoting deep sweating, which enhances blood circulation, reduces stress, and supports detoxification. This process helps shift the body’s autonomic nervous system from a stressed state (sympathetic) to a relaxed state (parasympathetic), which is beneficial for fatigue recovery. The researchers found that infrared sauna therapy was not only effective in reducing fatigue but also in improving mood and overall well-being in CFS patients, with no reported adverse effects. These findings suggest that infrared sauna therapy could be a valuable complementary treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome, offering a non-invasive, natural option for managing the disorder’s most common symptoms.
