winter sunshine

Have you ever noticed feeling more energetic during the summer than in the middle of winter?

You’re not imagining it.

The amount of UVB light reaching Earth’s surface changes dramatically throughout the year. During winter months—particularly at northern latitudes—the sun sits lower in the sky, and much less UVB reaches the ground.

This means that even spending time outdoors may provide little opportunity for the body to naturally produce vitamin D during certain seasons.

Additional factors can further reduce exposure:

  • Shorter daylight hours
  • Colder temperatures
  • Heavy clothing
  • More time spent indoors
  • Increased cloud cover

For many people, these seasonal changes become an opportunity to pay closer attention to overall wellness habits.

Maintaining healthy nutrition, regular movement, quality sleep, stress management, and appropriate light exposure all contribute to feeling your best throughout the year.

Some individuals choose to work with their healthcare provider to monitor vitamin D status seasonally, particularly if they live in northern climates or spend limited time outdoors.

Rather than viewing wellness as seasonal, many experts encourage building year-round habits that adapt naturally to changing environments.

Consistency—not perfection—is often the greatest predictor of long-term wellness.
