Clearlight Plunge and Infrared sauna outdoors

A 2026 study published in the scientific journal Temperature explored how sauna bathing may influence the body’s immune response, particularly the circulation of white blood cells and immune-signaling proteins.

The study involved 51 adults who completed a 30-minute traditional Finnish sauna session, with a brief cooling shower halfway through. Researchers collected blood samples before, immediately after, and 30 minutes following the session to evaluate changes in immune cell activity.

Results revealed a significant, temporary increase in circulating white blood cells, including neutrophils and lymphocytes, which play important roles in identifying and responding to potential threats. These cell counts returned to baseline within 30 minutes after the session. Researchers also observed associations between changes in body temperature and certain immune-signaling proteins known as cytokines.

The findings suggest that sauna bathing may temporarily encourage immune cells to circulate more widely throughout the body, potentially supporting a natural process known as immune surveillance. However, additional research is needed to determine whether these short-term responses translate into lasting immune benefits.

In other words, even a single sauna session may influence how immune cells move throughout the body, offering new insight into the potential relationship between heat exposure and immune health.
