In a study led by Yohei Tanaka and colleagues, the effects of near-infrared (NIR) laser treatment on skin rejuvenation were evaluated in 50 Japanese patients. The researchers used a 1064-nm NIR laser and conducted both objective computer assessments and histological evaluations to measure improvements in skin texture, wrinkles, and dilated pores. The results showed significant improvements in all these areas, with patients reporting high satisfaction levels. Histological analysis revealed increased elastin production in the dermis, with benefits lasting up to 90 days post-treatment. The study concluded that NIR laser therapy can be a safe and effective method for stimulating elastin production, which in turn helps to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and minimize the appearance of pores.

The findings from this study suggest that infrared radiation, specifically in the form of NIR laser therapy, can have significant benefits for skin health, particularly in promoting the production of elastin, a key protein responsible for skin’s elasticity and firmness. Although the study focused on laser treatment, the mechanisms involved—such as increased elastin and epidermal smoothness—are also relevant to infrared saunas, which utilize similar wavelengths of infrared light. By stimulating blood circulation and promoting collagen and elastin production, infrared saunas may offer a non-invasive method for skin rejuvenation, helping to maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin over time.
