A Controlled Trial to Determine the Efficacy of Red and Near-Infrared Light Treatment in Patient Satisfaction, Reduction of Fine Lines, Wrinkles, Skin Roughness, and Intradermal Collagen Density Increase
In the study conducted by Alexander Wunsch and Karsten Matuschka, the researchers aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of two novel light sources for polychromatic, non-thermal photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy, focusing on skin rejuvenation and collagen production. The study involved 136 volunteers, who were randomly assigned to receive either 611–650 nm or 570–850 nm polychromatic light treatments twice a week. These treatments were compared with a control group, and various measures were taken, including clinical photography, ultrasonographic collagen density, and digital skin profiling. The results showed that the treatment groups experienced significant improvements in skin complexion, roughness, and collagen density, with blinded clinical evaluations confirming these improvements.
The study concluded that while the polychromatic spectrum did not offer any distinct advantage over the red-light-only spectrum, both light sources demonstrated efficacy and safety in enhancing skin appearance and increasing intradermal collagen. These findings suggest that non-thermal PBM, using novel light sources, can be an effective approach to improving skin health, enhancing skin texture, and stimulating collagen production. The study highlights the growing potential of red light therapy and similar light-based treatments in non-invasive skin rejuvenation, providing an alternative to more invasive procedures for individuals seeking to improve their skin’s appearance and overall well-being.
