A study published in the Circulation Journal in December 2004 investigated the potential benefits of sauna therapy for patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), focusing on reducing dangerous irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias) associated with sudden cardiac death. Researchers from Kagoshima University in Japan, led by Dr. Chuwa Tei, conducted the study with 30 CHF patients who were divided into two groups: a treatment group that underwent 15 minutes of daily infrared sauna sessions at 60°C, followed by a 30-minute rest, and a control group that simply rested in a room at normal temperature. After two weeks, the sauna-treated group showed a significant decrease in the number of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), a type of irregular heartbeat, as well as an improvement in heart rate variability (a measure of heart health) and a reduction in plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels, which is a marker of heart failure severity.

The study results suggest that regular sauna use may improve heart function and reduce arrhythmias in CHF patients, potentially lowering the risk of sudden cardiac death. Improvements were also noted in overall symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath, and fluid retention among sauna-treated patients, while the control group showed no such changes. These findings indicate that sauna therapy could be a valuable, non-invasive addition to conventional treatments for CHF, helping to manage arrhythmias and improving quality of life without the risks associated with some medications.
