Benefits of Tanning Salons with Saunas

Enhanced Wellness Offerings

Infrared saunas are known for their significant health benefits. Unlike traditional saunas, which use heated air to warm the body, infrared saunas use infrared light to penetrate the skin and heat the body directly. This method offers a variety of wellness benefits, including detoxification, improved circulation, pain relief, and relaxation. By adding an infrared sauna to your tanning salon, you can attract health-conscious clients who are looking for more than just a tan. They will appreciate the added value of a service that promotes their overall well-being.

Weight Loss Potential

Another notable benefit of infrared saunas is their potential to aid in weight loss. The infrared heat may help increase the core body temperature, leading to an elevated heart rate similar to what is experienced during moderate exercise. This process may help burn calories and improve metabolism. Regular use of an infrared sauna may be an effective complement to a weight loss regimen, making it an attractive service tanning salons may add for clients looking to shed extra pounds. Highlighting this benefit may draw in a new segment of clients focused on fitness and weight management.

Increased Revenue Streams

Diversifying your services with the addition of an infrared sauna in your tanning salon can open up new revenue streams. You can offer individual sauna sessions, package deals, and memberships that combine tanning and sauna use. This variety can appeal to a broader range of clients and encourage repeat business. Pricing strategies could include offering discounted rates for first-time users or bundling sauna sessions with other salon services. Successful tanning salons that have integrated saunas often report a significant boost in their income and client retention rates. Competitive Edge

In a competitive market, offering unique services like an infrared sauna can set your tanning salon apart. By incorporating an infrared sauna in your tanning salon, you can distinguish your business from others that only offer traditional tanning services. This competitive edge can be particularly beneficial in attracting clients who are looking for a comprehensive wellness experience. Just look at customer testimonials and case studies from other salons highlighting the positive impact and increased customer satisfaction resulting from adding an infrared sauna at the tanning salon.

Year-Round Appeal

Tanning tends to be seasonal, but infrared saunas have a year-round appeal. During warmer months, when tanning services may see a decline, saunas may maintain steady client interest. The warmth and relaxation provided by the infrared sauna are also very appealing during winter. By promoting the benefits of using the infrared sauna in conjunction with tanning, you can ensure a consistent flow of clients throughout the year.

Skin Health Benefits

Infrared saunas offer numerous benefits for your skin, making them an excellent complement to tanning services. The infrared light may help reduce acne, improve skin tone, and provide anti-aging effects by promoting collagen production. Regular use of an infrared sauna may result in healthier, more radiant skin, which aligns perfectly with the goals of many tanning salon clients. Educating your clients about these benefits may enhance their overall experience and satisfaction with your services.

Creating a holistic relaxation experience may significantly enhance client satisfaction. An infrared sauna at your tanning salon can transform your salon into a wellness sanctuary where clients can unwind and de-stress. Designing a spa-like atmosphere with calming music, aromatherapy, and comfortable seating may elevate the overall experience. Emphasizing mental well-being and stress relief may attract clients looking for a place to relax and rejuvenate, making your infrared sauna tanning salon their go-to destination.

Marketing and Promotion Opportunities

Adding an infrared sauna to a tanning salon opens up numerous marketing and promotion opportunities. You can launch innovative campaigns highlighting the new service, utilize social media to share client testimonials and success stories, and offer special promotions to entice new and existing clients. Partnerships with local wellness influencers or hosting open house events where clients can experience the infrared sauna for free can also drive interest and bookings at your tanning salon. Leveraging customer reviews and feedback in your marketing materials may further solidify your salon’s reputation for providing high-quality, comprehensive wellness services.

Easy Integration and Low Maintenance

Incorporating an infrared sauna into your tanning salon is relatively straightforward, especially with a range of sizes and custom builds available to fit your salon’s size. Infrared saunas require less space than traditional saunas and may be easily installed in a small room or corner of your salon. They are also energy-efficient and have lower operating costs. Maintenance is minimal, primarily involving regular cleaning and occasional checks on the infrared heating elements. A cost-benefit analysis often shows that the increased revenue and client satisfaction quickly offset the initial investment.

The evidence is overwhelming. Toxins are everywhere, in our water, air, food, soaps, shampoos, even in the clothes we wear. It has become commonplace to read about mercury in our fish, jet fuel in our lettuce, heavy metals in our air. Toxins have been directly linked with a host of diseases: cancer, lowered immune function, arthritis, autism, fibromyalgia, Alzheimers, neurological and cardiovascular disorders, just to name a few.

People living today carry within their bodies a chemical cocktail made up of industrial chemicals, pesticides, food additives, heavy metals, general anesthetics, and the residues of therapeutic pharmaceuticals, as well as toxins from alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and illegal drugs. It is a problem that is not going away, at least not in our lifetime. We need to detoxify!

Infrared Sauna Detoxification Research & Literature

Ways to Detoxify

Sherry Rogers MD in her groundbreaking book, Detox or Die, says toxicity is a one-way street leading to disease; the key to healing the impossible is to reverse the toxicity. But what is the best way to detoxify? There are several methods being used today: chelation, where enzyme preparations are injected into the bloodstream, binding toxins as they pass through and are excreted; fasting, with or without herbal and mineral preparations and/or colonics to help to remove toxins; and saunas, removing toxins through sweating.

Whereas the first two methods are suitable for persons with a high degree of dedication and/or discipline, the infrared sauna method is one that can be used easily and effectively by almost everyone. And it can be used in conjunction with the other methods of fasting, colonics, and chelation. Raymond Francis, in his fascinating book, Never be Sick Again, emphatically states, “Not only do saunas feel good, they are good! Saunas get your heart beating and your blood circulating, helping the body to detoxify in unique and important ways.”

Detoxifying Through Sweat

Sweating is an ancient tradition and a good method of removing toxins. From the Roman Steam Bath, to the Finnish Savusauna, the Russian Banya, the Native American Sweat Lodge, and the Moroccan Hammam, people have been detoxing and restoring themselves this way throughout history.

Today, there are many types of sauna and steam products available for almost any budget and location, from exotic built-ins to simple portable units. Some use conventional steam, some use heated rocks, and others use efficient infrared heaters. The effectiveness of the detox will depend on the type of heat chosen and the protocol employed.

Couple Using Clearlight Infrared Sauna to Sweat and Detox

Steam vs. Sauna

In her book Some Like it Hot, Nicola Rajala describes the major difference between the steam room and the conventional sauna. Although the steam room feels hotter because of the high humidity, the body actually has a harder time sweating because of the relatively low temperature (120°F). The water on the skin is primarily condensation rather than actual sweat. The conventional “box of hot rocks” sauna is still very common today, but it seems to be losing ground due to the many advantages of infrared saunas such as energy efficiency, comfort in use, deeper penetration of heat, and more substantial detox.

Using Infrared Saunas to Detox

In their book Beyond Antibiotics, Drs. Michael A. Schmidt et al. state the following: “Saunas are being used by some doctors to stimulate the release of toxins from the bodies of their patients. They have found that a lower temperature (105-110°F) sauna taken for a longer duration is most beneficial. These low temperatures stimulate a fat sweat, which eliminates toxins stored in fat, as opposed to the high-temperature sauna, which encourages a water sweat.”

There is a growing consensus among healthcare professionals, as well as the general public, that infrared saunas are a safe, effective, and enjoyable way to detoxify the body. Putting an infrared sauna in your home is a great way to prevent disease and promote a healthy, relaxed lifestyle. As with any regimen, always consult with your doctor first. It is important to start out slowly, drink enough water, take a good multi-vitamin and multi-mineral, and to wash off any sweat after the session to prevent toxins from being reabsorbed.

Promoting Mobility Through Infrared Saunas and RLT

Climbing the stairs can be exhausting, but the task can be insurmountable for those with mobility issues. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 12% of adults in the U.S. have a mobility disability that makes climbing stairs or even walking on a flat surface challenging.

Infrared saunas and red light therapy (RLT) are both natural mobility treatments gaining popularity that can help you get back on your feet and move again. However, these therapies differ in how they benefit mobility. To help you determine which may be better for your needs, here’s how red light therapy and infrared sauna mobility treatments compare to one another.

Infrared Saunas for Mobility

Unlike traditional saunas that just heat the air around you, infrared saunas use light to create heat that can penetrate deep into your joints and muscles, targeting three different layers of tissue depending on the type of sauna used (near, mid, and far infrared). Each of these wavelengths has unique benefits:

  • Near-infrared wavelengths primarily aid in wound healing and increased immune function.
  • Mid-infrared wavelengths are known to enhance circulation and reduce inflammation.
  • Far-infrared wavelengths are effective for detoxification, weight loss, and relaxation.

Beyond just heating, infrared saunas provide several health benefits that can significantly contribute to improved mobility. Regular use can help stabilize blood pressure levels by enhancing vascular function. The deep penetrating heat can reduce inflammation in muscles and joints, which is a common cause of pain and stiffness. Additionally, the soothing heat helps relax muscles, alleviate spasms and improve flexibility. The increased heart rate during a session aids in calorie burn and healthy, gradual weight loss that can take pressure off of joints.

For those grappling with mobility issues, the penetrating heat of an infrared sauna can bring about a sense of relief, easing tightness and stiffness in joints and muscles. This, in turn, can enhance blood flow, a crucial factor in mobility, as it aids in the delivery of oxygen and other nutrients to tissues throughout the body. If your mobility issues stem from chronic pain, infrared sauna therapy can offer respite, helping to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation that contributes to it.

Infrared sauna therapy is a non-invasive, holistic treatment option for temporary pain management and mobility enhancement. By incorporating regular sessions into a wellness routine, individuals can experience reduced pain levels and improved joint function. This approach not only addresses symptoms but also promotes overall health and well-being, potentially leading to sustained improvements in mobility and quality of life.

Red Light Therapy for Mobility

While red light therapy (RLT) may sound similar to infrared saunas, the two are distinctly different therapies. Infrared saunas use heat from lamps to alleviate joint pain and stiffness, while RLT uses red low-level light wavelengths to encourage cellular repair and regeneration. This comparison can help you understand the unique benefits of each therapy and make an informed decision about which one is right for you.

RLT is particularly effective in relieving pain and accelerating recovery for individuals with injuries. By stimulating cellular repair, it helps reduce inflammation, a common contributor to joint pain and stiffness. This reduction in inflammation not only alleviates pain but also enhances the range of motion in affected joints.

For instance, in one study, low-power red light therapy proved effective in “relieving pain and disability” for patients with degenerative osteoarthritis in their knees. This highlights the potential of RLT to provide significant benefits for those suffering from chronic joint conditions.

The therapeutic effects of RLT extend beyond pain relief. The red light wavelengths penetrate the skin and stimulate the mitochondria within cells, promoting energy production and enhancing cell function. This boost in cellular activity aids in tissue repair and regeneration, making it a valuable therapy for injury recovery and overall joint health. Regular use of RLT can lead to sustained improvements in joint function, flexibility, and mobility.

For individuals with mobility issues, RLT offers a simple and natural approach to temporary pain management and joint health. The therapy can be administered through various devices, from full-body towers to handheld units, to target specific areas, making it accessible and convenient. The sessions are typically short, lasting between 10 to 20 minutes, and can be easily incorporated into a daily routine.

Combining Infrared Saunas and Red Light Therapy for Mobility

While both infrared sauna and red light therapy have their benefits for people with mobility issues, when used together, these holistic approaches can significantly improve mobility and enhance overall physical health.

A red light therapy tower can be easily attached to an infrared sauna, allowing you to harness the healing technologies of both therapies. When using both RLT and an infrared sauna for mobility, try to alternate the sessions of each therapy. For instance, after spending 20 to 30 minutes in the infrared sauna, follow it up with a 10 to 15-minute RLT session. By combining the powers of infrared sauna and red light therapy, you can take charge of your mobility. This duo can enhance blood flow, reduce inflammation, and accelerate tissue repair.

Helps Relax Tense Muscles

Infrared therapy can be a game-changer, especially for athletes. The warmth of the infrared rays in the sauna penetrates sore muscles and loosens them up, helping improve blood circulation. This therapy can also help relax tight muscles before a workout, giving you a performance edge. After a workout, infrared saunas are helpful in terms of recovery, ridding the body of toxins such as lactic acid, which builds up in muscles during exercise.

Helps Ease Physical Pain

The heat from an infrared sauna can significantly relieve men with chronic conditions such as frequent headaches, fibromyalgia, and arthritis. By increasing circulation, loosening muscles, and reducing inflammation, an infrared sauna offers a comforting respite from physical pain, offering temporary relief that can help with relaxation and making pain more manageable.

Helps Reduce Stress

Infrared saunas for men can help reduce stress, which often leads to a better night’s sleep. The treatment has been found to lower cortisol, your body’s stress hormone. Lowering cortisol levels has many positive effects, including decreasing blood pressure, reducing inflammation, and regulating your body’s metabolism. Lower cortisol levels also help your body better regulate its sleep patterns, allowing you to rest uninterrupted.

Can Aid in Weight Loss

Believe it or not, you may be able to lose weight by spending just 30 minutes in an infrared sauna. Studies have found that a short session in one may increase your metabolic rate. For instance, a study by Binghamton University in New York found that participants who used an infrared sauna for three 30-minute weekly sessions lost 4% of body fat in four months. The high heat in an infrared sauna also helps you shed water weight through sweat.

Can Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men are twice as likely to die of heart disease than women. Because an infrared sauna helps increase blood flow, improve circulation, and lower cholesterol and blood pressure, it’s a good tool to help improve men’s cardiovascular health, potentially reducing the risk of heart disease.

Can Help Strengthen the Brain

In recent years, studies have found that the use of infrared saunas can reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in men. A 2017 Finnish study, for example, looked at the sauna use of 2,315 healthy men between the ages of 42 and 60 and found that those who used an infrared sauna two to three times per week had a 20% to 21% lower risk of dementia or Alzheimer’s. Those men who used the infrared sauna more often – between four and seven times a week — had an even lower risk, averaging around 65% to 66%.

While infrared saunas are an effective tool for improving men’s health, incorporating other natural methods can further enhance overall well-being. A holistic approach to health can address various aspects of physical, mental, and emotional well-being, making a significant difference in quality of life. Below are several effective strategies:

Regular Exercise

Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight, improves cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles and bones, and boosts mental health. Men should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week, as recommended by the American Heart Association.

Healthy Diet

A balanced diet is crucial for maintaining good health. For men, this means incorporating a variety of foods rich in essential nutrients such as proteins, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Foods like lean meats, fish, eggs, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains should be staples in the diet.

Adequate Sleep

Quality sleep is often overlooked but is vital for overall health. Adults typically need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. Poor sleep can lead to numerous health issues, including cognitive decline, increased stress levels, weight gain, and a weakened immune system.

Stress Management

Stress can take a significant toll on men’s health, leading to conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, and mental health disorders like anxiety and depression. Finding effective ways to manage stress is crucial. Techniques such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, and deep-breathing exercises can help reduce stress levels.

Limiting alcohol intake to moderate levels and quitting smoking can substantially reduce these risks and contribute to better overall health.

Hydration

Adequate hydration is essential for maintaining all bodily functions. Drinking enough water can improve digestion, aid in nutrient absorption, and maintain healthy skin. Men should aim for at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, more if they are physically active or live in a hotter climate.

Regular Medical Check-ups

Preventative healthcare is crucial. Regular visits to a healthcare provider for screenings and check-ups can help detect potential health issues early on. Men should discuss their individual health needs with their doctors, including screenings for cholesterol levels, blood pressure, diabetes, and prostate health.

Boosting Men’s Overall Health and Wellness

Incorporating these natural strategies into daily life, along with the use of infrared saunas, can significantly enhance men’s health and wellness. From reducing toxins, relieving inflammation, and lowering blood pressure to minimizing pain, alleviating stress, and losing weight, the benefits of saunas for men can boost overall health and wellness across several dimensions.

Every day is an excellent opportunity to adopt these practices and commit to a healthier lifestyle. By making gradual, sustainable changes, men can improve their overall well-being and enjoy a higher quality of life.

The Benefits of Infrared Saunas on Depression

Taking care of your mental health is a necessary factor in your overall well-being. If you or a loved one are facing depression, infrared sauna use might be a beneficial addition to your health routine in conjunction with advice and treatment from your doctor. Many studies have recently been conducted to test the effectiveness of whole-body hyperthermia, or the use of extreme heat, to assist in the treatment of depression. Read on to learn more about these recent studies and how they are paving the road toward more knowledge on the benefits of hyperthermia and infrared saunas on depression.

Studies on Saunas for Depression & Mental Health

Feasibility and Acceptability of an Integrated Mind-Body Intervention for Depression

Exciting new research from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) led by Dr. Ashley E. Mason is unveiling innovative ways to treat depression with infrared sauna technology. This 2024 clinical trial has demonstrated significant reductions in depression symptoms using a combination of whole-body hyperthermia (WBH) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Published in May 2024, the study is groundbreaking in its use of infrared sauna sessions alongside traditional psychotherapy. The trial utilized Clearlight’s Curve™ Far Infrared Sauna Dome to treat 16 adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) over eight weekly sessions, combining the benefits of heat therapy with structured psychological support. Participants experienced whole-body hyperthermia through infrared sauna sessions, designed to elevate body temperature, paired with weekly CBT sessions.

Initial findings are promising. Of the 12 participants who completed the combined treatment, 11 no longer met the criteria for major depressive disorder by the end of the study. This remarkable outcome suggests that integrating WBH and CBT could revolutionize depression treatment. While the trial had a small sample size, the results warrant future larger controlled clinical trials.

“This is exciting work, and it is early days,” stated Dr. Mason. “That 11 of 12 participants who completed treatment no longer met criteria for major depressive disorder sends a positive message – we need to continue researching this treatment package.”

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Whole-Body Hyperthermia (WBH) Protocol

A recent 2021 study has shown promising results with whole-body hyperthermia (WBH) as a non-pharmacologic treatment for major depressive disorder while using Clearlight Saunas Far Infrared heating technology in The Curve Far Infrared Sauna Dome. Where prior trials in similar studies have used medical infrared hyperthermia devices, this study studied to see if a commercial device without FDA-imposed limitations could produce the degree of core body temperature (101.3 °F) associated with reduced depressive symptoms in prior WBH studies.

The study assessed the amount of time needed to achieve this core body temperature and the changes (pre-post WBH) in self-reported mood and affect. Twenty-five healthy adults completed a single WBH session lasting up to 110 min in the Curve Sauna Dome. Core body temperatures were recorded during WBH as well as mood and affect at points before and after whole-body hyperthermia. Whole-body hyperthermia treatment ended after a participant maintained 101.3 °F for two consecutive minutes. The study shows the effectiveness of Clearlight Saunas Far Infrared Heating technology at raising core body temperature.

Results found that all participants achieved the target core body temperature (101.3 °F) within 82.12 minutes on average. In analyses of changes in mood and affect, the study found that participants noted reductions in self-reported depression symptoms from 1 week pre- to 1-week post-WBH, and reductions in self-reported negative affect before and after their whole-body hyperthermia session. This research shows that WBH protocol holds promise in further research on the benefits of commercially available infrared sauna devices and hyperthermia in major depressive disorder treatment.

Whole-Body Hyperthermia for the Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder

A 2016 study conducted by psychiatry professor Charles Raison and his team aimed to explore the need to identify novel treatments for major depressive disorder. Prior to this study, a smaller study took place in which of 16 individuals with major depression, a single hyperthermia treatment reduced their depression scores almost by 50% five days later. The 2016 study was conducted to test whether whole-body hyperthermia has specific antidepressant effects when compared with a placebo condition and to evaluate the persistence of the antidepressant effects of a single treatment.

A 6-week, randomized, double-blind study took place comparing hyperthermia with a placebo condition. Participants were medically healthy, met criteria for major depressive disorder, were free of psychotropic medication use, and had a baseline 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale score of 16 or greater. During the study, researchers compared a single session of active WBH to a placebo condition. The placebo condition matched all aspects of the whole-body hyperthermia condition except intense heat.

When compared with the placebo group, the active WBH group showed significantly reduced Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores across the 6-week post-intervention study period. A single session of hyperthermia produced a rapid and powerful antidepressant effect that was not observed in the placebo group. Additionally, the benefits of a single hyperthermia treatment persisted for six weeks, leading to the conclusion that whole-body hyperthermia holds promise as a safe, rapid-acting, and prolonged antidepressant effect.

A Hot Topic for Health: Results of the Global Sauna Survey

Researchers set out to determine the motivations and experiences of typical sauna users. An online 71-item questionnaire compiling information on the individual characteristics, sauna-related habits, and perceived health and wellness experiences of regular sauna bathers was conducted. The 2019 study incorporated a quality of life scoring tool to measure physical and mental indicators of well-being.

The study was made up of 482 respondents who sauna-bathed approximately 1–2 times per week. The key reasons indicated by respondents for sauna-bathing included relaxation/stress reduction, pain relief, and socializing. Nearly a third of respondents reported medical conditions. Of this group, those with back/musculoskeletal pain and mental issues cited the greatest improvements in their conditions with sauna use. Of all respondents, 83.5% reported improved sleep after sauna use. This study documents that sauna users are motivated to use saunas predominantly for relaxation, reporting health benefits especially around mental well-being and sleep

Analysis of well-being scores after grouping respondents into groups by sauna-bathing frequency revealed that sauna users who utilize a sauna 5–15 times monthly recorded comparatively higher mental well-being scores as compared to respondents who were sauna-bathing less frequently.

Pioneering Study at UCSF Shows Promising Results in Combating Depression with Infrared Sauna Therapy

In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month, groundbreaking research from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is shedding new light on innovative treatments for depression. A new 2024 clinical trial led by Dr. Ashley E. Mason, a clinical psychologist associated with the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Health and the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences, has indicated notable reductions in depression symptoms through a combined approach of whole-body hyperthermia (WBH) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

The study, officially published on May 14, 2024 in The International Journal of Hyperthermia, is pioneering in its integration of infrared sauna sessions with conventional psychotherapy. Utilizing Clearlight’s Curve™ Far Infrared Sauna Dome, the trial treated 16 adults diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) over eight weekly sessions, blending the therapeutic effects of heat with structured psychological counseling.

Read the full press release here.

Why Whole-Body Hyperthermia and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Dr. Mason’s inspiration for this innovative approach came from previous studies that showcased the rapid alleviation of depressive symptoms through infrared heat treatment. The integrated treatment approach aims to harness the synergistic effects of physical and mental therapies. Infrared saunas are known for their ability to induce deep relaxation and improve mood, which could translate into powerful mental health benefits when combined with CBT, a widely recognized method for treating depression.

Remarkable Preliminary Results

The preliminary findings from Dr. Mason’s trial offer a beacon of hope for those battling depression. Out of the 12 participants who completed the combined treatment, an impressive 11 individuals no longer met the criteria for major depressive disorder by the end of the study. This significant result suggests that the dual approach of WBH and CBT could be a transformative treatment for depression.

“This is exciting work, and it is early days,” remarked Dr. Mason. “That 11 of 12 participants who completed treatment no longer met criteria for major depressive disorder sends a positive message – we need to continue researching this treatment package.”

Health & Wellness Industry Leaders Back the Findings

Clearlight’s Founder and CEO, Dr. Raleigh Duncan, expressed strong support for the trial’s promising results. According to Dr. Duncan, “This groundbreaking study on depression from UCSF aligns with what we have been hearing from our customers for the past 25 years. People have been telling us how using our infrared saunas has changed their lives by reducing stress and lifting their spirits. Thanks to Dr. Ashley Mason and all the people at UCSF who have worked tirelessly to bring these facts to light so that people can find new ways to heal.”

Dr. Duncan has been a pioneer in infrared therapy, contributing significantly to advancements in technologies designed to heal the human body.

A Promising Future for Sauna and Depression Research

While the results from Dr. Mason’s trial are indeed promising, she acknowledges that further research is essential. Future trials will aim to validate these findings across larger groups and differing demographics to more fully understand the therapeutic potential and practical implementation of this innovative treatment. This UCSF study marks a hopeful step toward newer, more effective treatments for depression.

For those interested in delving deeper into the scientific nuances of the study, the full research is available here.

As mental health challenges continue to impact millions of lives, pioneering research like this demonstrates the importance of exploring diverse treatment options. By leveraging the benefits of infrared sauna therapy and CBT, this UCSF study illuminates a promising path forward in the ongoing battle against depression.

Build Your Dream Sauna with a Custom Infrared Sauna

Rising above the humble origins of traditional saunas, infrared saunas have carved a niche in the wellness landscape due to their distinct health benefits. Enthusiasts advocate their prowess in detoxification, relaxation, and a host of other health-promoting effects, all without the fiercely high temperatures associated with conventional saunas.

For many, the allure of a custom infrared sauna lies in its ability to combine the innate healing properties of infrared heat with a tailored environment that speaks to one’s personal aesthetics and functional needs. This tailored approach marks a paradigm shift, turning a solitary wellness practice into an immersive, aesthetic, and even a spiritual experience tailor-made for each user.

Read on to delve into the world of custom infrared saunas, exploring the different options available and how you can create your own personalized oasis of relaxation with the help of Clearlight’s expert custom sauna team.

Types of Infrared Saunas

When it comes to infrared saunas, there are two main options to consider: pre-built saunas and fully custom saunas. Both have distinct benefits depending on your ideal infrared sauna situation, offering options for everyone depending on space and budget needs.

Pre-Built Saunas

Pre-built infrared saunas are an excellent starting point for those seeking efficient set-up, lower costs, and space-saving sanctuaries. Designed to fit a variety of spaces, these saunas often come with amenities such as chromotherapy, halotherapy, and other modern add-ons that elevate the sauna experience. They are particularly suited for home use, where space might be a constraint, and for those looking for a well-rounded sauna experience without the intricacies of customization.

Fully Custom Saunas

For the true wellness connoisseur aiming for a singular statement, a fully customized infrared sauna is an irreplaceable option. This choice offers the freedom to dictate every detail to fit all of your design and wellness needs, from the equipment and layout to the type of wood and any additional features you can envision. With Clearlight’s custom sauna option, the only limit is your imagination – and, of course, the physical dimensions of your space.

Medical Grade Chromotherapy

Upgrade your Clearlight Infrared Sauna to feature medical-grade chromotherapy, a cutting-edge enhancement that elevates your sauna experience to new heights. With 96 LED lights and 12 color settings, this advanced chromotherapy system allows you to immerse yourself in a spectrum of therapeutic colors. Additionally, a handheld adjustable brightness control empowers you to tailor the intensity of the light to suit your mood and wellness goals.

Clearlight Red Light Therapy

By concentrating powerful medical-grade LEDs, Clearlight’s innovative light therapy delivers targeted healing to specific areas of the body. The red and near-infrared wavelengths stimulate cellular function, particularly in the mitochondria, promoting the production of ATP – the energy currency of the cell. This results in enhanced cellular repair, reduced inflammation, and accelerated healing.

Vibrational Resonance Therapy Module

Enhance relaxation and rejuvenation by adding Vibrational Resonance Therapy (VRT) to your Clearlight sauna. VRT combines the benefits of sound and vibration to soothe both body and mind, promoting deep relaxation and stress relief. These VRT modules attach to the bottom of the sauna bench, while the amplifier, responsible for delivering the therapeutic vibrations, is discreetly situated underneath.

AROMA ONE® Aromatherapy Device

Utilizing ultrasonic, high-frequency technology, the AROMA ONE essential oil diffuser converts water and essential oils into a fine mist that permeates the air, filling your sauna with the soothing aroma of your chosen essential oils. Whether you seek relaxation, invigoration, or respiratory support, aromatherapy offers a delightful and therapeutic addition to your custom sauna experience.

HALO ONE® Halotherapy Generator

Transform your Clearlight sauna into a healing salt cave with the HALO ONE halotherapy generator. This innovative addition harnesses the therapeutic benefits of salt therapy, known as halotherapy, to promote respiratory health and skin rejuvenation. Our infrared saunas create an ideal environment for salt therapy, allowing the liquid salt aerosol to be evenly distributed and providing optimal salt concentration for healing.

Benefits of Infrared Saunas for Your Spa or Gym Business

Infrared saunas are great at home for personal use, but can also be great assets for gyms, spas, and other wellness centers. Including an infrared sauna in your list of services will give your customers that extra health boost after a workout or spa treatment and a lasting impression of your facility. It is an easy service to include that requires little to no attention and can exponentially improve a customer’s holistic experience. Saunas, along with halotherapy and chromotherapy, are amenities that can attract new customers to your business. See how adding an infrared sauna to your business can help you provide the ultimate health and wellness experience.

Benefits of Having a Sauna at a Gym

Sure, gym saunas are relaxing and can be turned into a social activity, but is there a connection between sauna use and fitness? Are they just a nice gym perk, or do they actually provide any health benefits? Research shows that post-workout sauna use can boost recovery, strengthen your heart, and aid your whole body to reach a relaxed state. Learn more about the health benefits of having a gym sauna can provide for your members:

Muscle Recovery

The #1 reason pro athletes turn to saunas is for their proven aid in muscle recovery. Saunas are an optimal way to relax muscle tissue and relieve pain. The heat from the sauna enhances oxygen and nutrient-rich blood circulation throughout your whole body. This makes sauna sessions excellent for a post-exercise wind-down routine. Any sports-focused gym can benefit from it!

Improved Cardiovascular Health

A workout for your heart. There aren’t many treatments that specifically train your heart like saunas do. In fact, a 2019 study in Complementary Therapies in Medicine found that the changes in blood pressure and heart rate levels during sauna bathing are similar to those induced during a moderate-intensity cardio exercise session. Studies show that regular sauna sessions can even reduce your risk of stroke.

Weight Loss

You’ve probably heard saunas are popularly known for supporting weight loss. And there’s research backing this up. A quick sauna session can help boost your metabolism and caloric burn by increasing sweat production, heart rate, and circulation. Though those quick weight loss claims may be exaggerations, incorporating sauna use into your regular health and wellness regimen can provide long-term support during your weight loss journey.

For these reasons, a sauna room isn’t only an extra gym membership perk; it can also be a treatment tool that contributes to any fitness plan. These are just some of the many benefits sauna bathing can provide in the search for a fitter, healthier life.

Benefits of Having a Sauna in a Spa

Sauna bathing can also provide great benefits to any spa or wellness center. Wellness businesses can differentiate themselves from competitors by providing unique wellness services. Saunas amplify any customer’s service and make their overall experience feel more luxurious. Because not every spa or wellness facility offers amenities like commercial infrared saunas, having one will make your overall business proposition stand out. Learn more about the amazing benefits adding a sauna experience to your spa can provide for your clientele:

Detoxification

In the search for a healthy body, people are always concerned about what goes into their bodies. Unfortunately, most of us don’t live a 100% off-the-grid lifestyle and are exposed to chemicals in our environment, and even food, daily. We breathe and ingest dangerous pesticides, plastics, heavy metals, and many other toxins that accumulate in our bodies and can potentially make us sick. This is why everyone in the wellness and fitness community is constantly on the lookout for the new detox juice or supplement that claims to clean your body.

As it turns out, enhanced sweat production is the only solution that is actually proven to flush your system of these toxins. Sauna-induced sweating is one of the easiest, most natural ways to do this. Aside from eliminating toxins from your body, sauna bathing is also known to aid your body in recovering from a cold, hangovers, or even help you quit smoking.

Stress Relief

Saunas have the power to put your body in a fully relaxed state. There is nothing like unwinding from a stressful day like at a spa with a facial, massage, and sauna session. It’s a warm and quiet space where guests can take a moment to focus on their breathing and meditate.

The heat from the sauna relaxes aching muscles, raises circulation, and even stimulates the release of endorphins, that’s the “feel good” chemical in our brains. Saunas are also said to reduce cortisol levels, the hormone that induces stress. That’s what makes sauna sessions perfect for anyone dealing with any stress level or even mental health problems. Saunas truly help induce people into a relaxed state.

New Spa Services: Sauna Ceremonies

Not only is sauna time in high demand at spa and wellness facilities but with a sauna, you can now add a new service called Aufguss. The Aufguss ritual is a traditional sauna ceremony that is designed to enhance the benefits of any sauna session. Heightening guests’ levels of endorphins and serotonin, the ritual soothes both the mind and the body.

A multi-sensory experience that combines lights, sound, essential oils, and blasts of hot air, for an amplified healing experience. Any sauna session can turn invigorating with a ceremony run by an Aufguss master. The master circulates around the sauna room flipping a towel to provide the service. It is truly an experience no one will want to miss when they visit your spa.

Mother’s Day: Embracing Self-Care and Resilience

Guest Author: Melissa Van Riper

When I was pregnant with my Daughter, I had a doctor who was bullying me about my weight. So, I found a prenatal yoga class a few towns away. I fell in love with the community and sisterhood our teacher, Kelly, had created. I have never felt so comfortable around women before. We were all in different phases of pregnancy, so almost every week, someone gave birth and graduated from the Mommy and Me class. So, to keep these women in my life, I created a Facebook group, and each week, I would quietly go over to a few people and ask if I could add them to my group so that we could stay in touch. Never in my life could I have predicted that my Yoga Mommies Facebook group would be what it is today. After we started having our babies and venturing out to different Mommy & Baby and music classes, the group began to grow. It was more than play dates; it was a trusted, safe space to know we were not alone. It was here that I found my tribe.

In 2013, I was going through the divorce process. I was 33 years old, and my Daughter was barely 2. I had given up my career and didn’t have any savings. I was alone in a house I couldn’t afford with a baby I adored. I had always had a host of unexplained medical problems and never really felt “healthy.” But when I was nursing my Daughter, I felt grounded and balanced despite the lack of sleep and emotional turmoil I was going through.

To “find myself again,” I was drawn to a Pranic healing center in my town. They had a free community night every week. I convinced my Mother to stay with my Daughter while I took an hour for myself. There, I met a lovely healer named Marie. Pranic healing is energy healing without touching. After our first session, Marie pulled me into the hallway and said, “Listen, honey, I don’t know what’s going on with you, but you have the most depleted Chakras I have ever seen.” I knew I was pretty bad, but I didn’t realize how bad it was. She recommended “Radical self-care.” Before I heard those words, I considered self-care as getting a pedicure or taking a bath…… yes those things can be nice, but they are forms of grooming. Radical self-care is healing from the inside out. I proceeded to go back to her every week.

Then, in October of that year, I had a freak accident that landed me in the hospital for two weeks. I was terrified. That was the first time I had ever been away for the night from my Daughter. They admitted me to the stroke floor and said I had to have an Angiogram, which at the time felt scary. I called one of my friends, who I thought had been through something similar with her husband, and I broke down on the phone, saying how scared and alone I felt.

The angiogram showed that I didn’t have a stroke, “just” two torn vertebral arteries in my neck. When I wheeled into my new room on the Neuro floor, I met the most lovely human being, Stephanie. She was sitting up in her bed with her husband next to her; she was a beacon of light, and I now refer to her as my guardian angel. She was battling brain cancer and had the most positive attitude and kind spirit I have ever witnessed. I was only with her for one night, but her amazing attitude towards life has inspired me to this day (Sadly, Stephanie lost her battle against cancer seven months later). Her positive attitude set the tone for my reawakening. I was surrounded by my family and my friends. I had so many visitors. My Yoga Mommy friends cooked for me and brought me treats and magazines. One even made plant-based milk for my Daughter because of the meds I had to stop nursing. I left the hospital two weeks later, feeling more loved than I ever had before.

I had a rough road to recovery, but it was radical self-care, and the love of the strong women that I surrounded myself with that got me through rebuilding my life.

I can remember my first Mother’s Day after my divorce. I took my Daughter out to get our favorite gluten-free pancakes. I looked around at all of these big tables with families celebrating the women in their lives. Then I looked across the table at my toddler. She was the reason I learned to celebrate myself. Fast-forward 10 years, and now we always do something together.

To me, Mother’s Day is about celebrating the aspect of myself that I love the most but am most critical of.

Being a strong Single Mom practically kills me every day. We were designed to raise our babies in a village, but now we must build our tribes. It feels hard because it is hard. We aren’t meant to do it alone.

These are some of the self-care practices that I have adopted over the years

  • Therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Weight training
  • Sauna – I read in the sauna
  • Stretching
  • Self-love
  • Massages
  • Skincare
  • Healthy meals
  • Eating Brisket alone in my car
  • AcupunctureEssential oils
  • Cryotherapy
  • Pranic healing
  • Eating fancy chocolate alone
  • Active rest
  • PEMF mat
  • Acupressure
  • Red light therapy
  • Walks with friends
  • Saying No
  • Removing toxins
  • Volunteering
  • Acupuncture
  • Journaling/ brain dump
  • Drawing
  • Singing horribly in my car
  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Cleaning my kitchen listening to 90’s R&B
  • Vibration resonance therapy
  • Soaking in the tub with a fancy bath bomb
  • Hiking
  • Finding a job that I love and feel supported and set up for success.

I’m not going to tell you to get lots of sleep or reduce stress because every time I read that advice, I roll my eyes and say that it doesn’t apply to any Moms I know.

Find the things that make your soul happy.

Self-care makes you a better Mom. You don’t need permission to do this. You are the only one that is going to take care of you. You can’t take care of your family if you aren’t well. I lead by example; I take time to do something for myself every day. Sometimes, it’s reading for 30 minutes in my Infrared Sauna, taking a walk with my Daughter while we talk, and sometimes, it’s an at-home spa night. This shows my Daughter that I am strong and human and shows her how to do the same for herself.

This is to say, take care of yourself and nourish your female friendships. They are the people who will save you when everything falls apart. Celebrate yourself and the strong women around you.

Happy Mother’s Day to Mothers everywhere. I see you, I feel you. Take some time to honor and celebrate yourself. You are amazing, and you are worth it.

Inside Look: How the Moms at Clearlight Get Their Self-Care

It’s no secret that finding a little “Me Time” is hard for the mothers in our lives, so we polled the team at Clearlight to hear how the mothers in our midst find their personal sanctuaries in between their hectic schedules.

Jessica McCullum, Project Manager

I LOVE working for such a revolutionary line of wellness products made possible by Clearlight.  I am a mother of 3 children on the Autism spectrum, as well as the founder of a small nonprofit advocating for resources for the Autism community here in Hawaiʻi.

My children struggle with inflammation and a lot of other respiratory issues given their compromised immune systems.  My eldest daughter, Ava, is nonverbal so our communication challenges are exponential especially when she is unable to voice when she is not feeling well.  We swear by the HALO ONE that carries us through continual viral illnesses as well as inflammatory struggles that cause a lot of chesty coughs and irritability.  We get ahead of the game by using the HALO ONE as recommended once per week for preventative care.  We pair this with a nightly routine of AROMA ONE aromatherapy to make sure we get a good nightʻs sleep (which is not easy to come by).  At the end of the day, I make sure that I bathe myself in the PERSONAL Tower Red Light Therapy to ground myself, as being a mother of children of special needs can be incredibly overwhelming and Iʻm constantly battling that “fight or flight” mode of anxiety, and mental health is a continual work in progress for me.

We continue to research the best in the wellness industry as a family living with Autism, so I am confident in saying that I am caring for my family in all facets of parenting, while also showing up to work everyday to further promote the science and the quality of this dr-designed, cutting edge technology.  We very much look forward to exploring the endless benefits that is made available by Clearlight, including but not limited to Chromotherapy, Vibrational Resonance Therapy, Infrared Therapy, and much more as we grow along with such a fantastic company that is just good for us, as well as the rest of the world that we live in.

Patty Ryan, Infrared Sauna Specialist

I have two older kids who are back at home for a bit longer for schooling. I rely on my Sanctuary 2 for my relaxation and time out from the kids and dogs. I was also diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis this past year and am doing my best to stay off medication! I have the Red Light CORE and HALO ONE® mounted inside my sauna. I love that I can do my sauna and red light at the same time! We also have the Amethyst PEMF Mat at my family’s beach house in Florida. When you have a sauna at home and travel away, you sure do miss it! The Amethyst Mat helps me relax and also helps with any joint pain/inflammation that I have.

Danielle Yanke, VP of Marketing

Being a toddler mom means having a little shadow accompany me everywhere and at all times, which includes personal self-care time. (Maybe that makes it “Us Care?”) But I don’t mind being able to cuddle together on our Amethyst PEMF mat, because she likes to fiddle with the settings while I absorb her snuggles.

Dana Young, Public Relations

As the mom of triplet girls, I have a sign in our house that reads “Good Things Come In Threes.”  And, I can tell you that this is absolutely true. From our favorite childhood fairy tales to Chinese proverbs and even the movies, my trio are living proof that people and things that come in threes are often luckier, more entertaining, and more effective than most other combinations. So, of course the Clearlight products that I swear by—but often have to wrestle back from my hat trick of 21 year olds—are our red light therapy tower suite of wellness solutions!  For me, there’s nothing better after an Oakland run or a morning of stand up paddling in Alameda than to plop myself in front of my CORE Tower to get the tightness out of my limbs.

For the trio, they love using red light therapy to help with skin clarity, acne reduction as well as stress relief from internship project deadlines and finals—before and after exams. My husband, who has early onset Parkinsons, uses red light to help lessen the symptoms that often come with the disease, including heaviness in his arms, leg cramps and increased fatigue. Almost every night, he uses red light therapy as he drifts off to sleep to ensure a good night’s rest.  And, since Clearlight now offers three red light towers (the Personal, the CORE, and a 3rd, the FULL BODY Tower—coming soon!) in our wellness family of products, I’d say the proverb of 3s is spot on!
